CERES -- The stiff wind that whistled through the Central Valley High soccer field meant the two teams had their scoring chances cut in half.
Ceres had the tailwind in the first half, while the host Hawks had the wind in their favor for the final 40 minutes.
In the end, it didn't matter, as the teams played to a scoreless tie in front of about 300 people Thursday afternoon.
They remain tied for first place in the Valley Oak League at 6-0-1. It's the first time the two Ceres schools have met with first place in the VOL on the line.
"The wind was a major factor," said Ceres goalkeeper Kyle Cerny. "First half, we were knocking on the door. Second half, they were doing the same."
The Hawks had most of the game's best chances to score. Early in the second half, Cerny stopped a flurry of shots.
"We had a lot of really good chances," Central Valley coach Omar Leon said. "It was a little frustrating we couldn't get one in."
With about 15 minutes left in the game, Central Valley had one of its best chances, when Antonio Cabrera broke free and fired a shot from about 10 yards away. Cerny was just able to knock the ball away.
"Kyle played an awesome game," Ceres coach Koeurn Phe said.
The two teams will play again, in the season finale. If they continue their winning ways, it would be for the league title.
"That last game's really going to be big," Leon said.
